We rely on our senses to guide our ways, and so are bacteria. During chemotaxis, bacteria adjust their movement in response to chemicals in the environment. If this chemical is a nutrient source or any other favorable substance, bacteria move towards the gradient of increasing concentration of the chemical. This is called positive chemotaxis. It is like discovering a restaurant by simply following the smell of an inviting food. If the chemical is toxic or somehow indicates unfavorable environment, bacteria escape from that area. This is called negative chemotaxis
