MICRO-C-OMICS-20: Heat Lovers

Most bacteria are found to love moderate temperatures (20-30 °C) but not all. Some bacteria proliferate at high temperatures like 45-100 °C (some even love above 100 °C). Those bacteria usually live in hot springs, volcanic sediments and hydrothermal vents. Since they love heat they are called thermophilic bacteria. These organisms are not only fascinating by themselves but they are also important for biotechnological applications as the enzymes from these bacteria can catalyze reactions at high temperatures. Learning about their life in extreme environments also helps to assess life in other planets.
